Mutt One Year Anniversary
March 16th at 56 Wooster St.
Last year on March 27th I hosted the first Mutt - with readings by Darcey Steinke, India Rose Timpani and Kay Kasparhauser at a then newly opened Bar Oliver. I hosted another 14 events following that, bringing together over 50 writers. It honestly changed my life doing these and I’m so excited to celebrate a year of it all on March 16th with this lineup.
I can’t really put into words how crazy it is for me to have Sarah Schulman and Penny Arcade there so I’m not even going to try.
Oisìn Roberts and I went to college together and he was one of the first people that I spoke to about books and writing. I had a gross little story that I had written pinned to the wall of my studio about a girl who was rotting inside, and Oisìn stuck a post it note on top of it that said something like “I love this - who are you?” He is an incredible writer and even more incredible to watch read and he’s coming all the way from London so I’m very honored and excited. We’ll have copies of his debut pamphlet, Close to God available at the event as well.
India is the main reason why I started reading things out loud in 2023 after she asked me to be in her event while she was selling me sandals at a clothing store she used to work at. She is one of my favorite writers in the world. She’s whip smart and funny and delicate and tough. Her poems feel like being trampled by a Robert Crumb character in midtown during a heatwave.
David Potters is the other reason I write. He’s one of the most supportive people in my life. I hope I offer him an iota of the encouragement he offers me. My small thank you is having him on this lineup. But really he’s doing me a favor.
Jimmy Cajoleas read a story at a Mutt event last August about a man who sees angels and who falls in love with a post woman, and I honestly think about it several times a week. His work is really dark and romantic. I’m so excited to have him back again.
OK last notes -
We will have a selection of books for sale by The JRS Collection. Joshua has an INSANE collection. He sells his books on the street and out of his East Village apartment. I went in January and it was the most fun I have ever had book shopping.
Very lucky to have Marcus Maddox taking pictures of the evening.
Drinks will be provided.
After party somewhere nearby?
Really really hope to see you there.
